A fit is caused by abnormal waves of electrical energy passing through the cells of the brain. This causes involuntary reactions throughout the body. These can include rigidness, crying out and then repetitive, jerking movements. This is a typical epileptic-type fit.
Fitting doesn't hurt the person, unless they bang their head or otherwise injure themselves. They may feel very sleepy after a fit, and may even sleep.
If you have questions about epilepsy, why not ask your friend? He should be a bit of an expert on his own condition.
