I'm pre diabetic and my numbers are somewhere between 105 to 117 after fasting but for the last several months I have had weight gain around the middle area. I usually weigh 115 but my weight has gone up to 125 and being diabetic seems to be putting the weight on. (I'm 4ft 11"tall ) My energy level is down which makes it harder to exercise. Any suggestions toward diet and exercise would really be appreciated. I didn't want to take medication but am thinking I might have to.

Hey, I understand where you are coming from. I was diagnosed as an early diabetic this fall (I think its about the same as pre-diabetic), my numbers were around 130-140 fasting and spike to about 180-200 in the morning. I too have felt my energy level drop and I agree that it does make it harder to exercise. Do you test everyday?? I do and I have really found that it helps me to know where I am at. But, here's some of the things that I have found have helped me since fall. Don't try to cut sugar and carbs out of your diet completely cold turkey, it doesn't work and you just end up craving them more (which doesn't help). Rather try to eliminate them (or cut way back on them) a bit by bit. Like I used to drink a can of Mt Dew in the morning everyday on my way to work and then at least 2 more cans throughout the day, now I drink like one can every couple of days. Also, find someone to exercise with and set specific times to get together and exercise. I've done this (a friend and I exercise like 3 days a week after work) and I've found its a lot harder to back out and not go if a friend is counting on you. And I've also found that even though I feel tired and drained, once I get going I feel better and I actually feel more energized after I've exercised.
I was told by a friend who has type 1 diabetes (insulin dependant) that controlling diabetes with diet and exercise is the HARDEST way because you have to be so careful and monitor your sugar and your feelings so carefully. Like she told me if she wants to eat a piece of chocolate cake every now and then she can, then just give herself a little more insulin to correct it. You and I can't do that.
I wish you the best of luck, be strong and brave and if you have any other questions or would just like to talk, message me back here. : ) Take care!
