Do You Know That Mental Illness Will Effect 1 in 4 of Us Sometime During Our Lifetime?

by admin

It happened to me after an operation on my spine went wrong. And whilst I was not classed as mentally ill my depression was classified under the mental health act as a mental illness.

My depression was brought on by trauma and perhaps this is case for millions of people who are now classed as having a mental illness. Is this a fair diagnoses do you think?

I'm thinking how quickly we judge people who have mental health issues like John Logan who jumped over a balcony with his two children resulting in the death of his son and with his daughter sustaning treadful injuries.

Perhaps the classification of what is a mental illness needs to be revised as my ....in Brackets (mental illness) was not a threat to other people as obviously was John Hogan's condition..... which was a tragety waiting to happen
No the 1 in 4 ratio is correct. I attended a seminar on mental health some years ago run by a professor from Durham Universtiy who showned us government findings to the effect that 1 in 4 of us will suffer from some form of mental illness...also there is proof that this is the case. Perhaps not in the States but certainly here in the UK these figures apply.
No wildmonk i;m nor ashamed why should I be it was caused be outwith my control. Had I been well enough at the time I would have probably taken that particular health trust to court for negligence by the surgeon who performed my operation..
But I didn't and that is that.

Yes the 1 in 4 statistic is indeed very true sadly. The fact that there is still such a stigma attached to it that makes that statistic even worse. Many people do not realise that it will affect them directly or indirectly at some point and then when it does happen they suddenly feel out of their depth or they are shocked what mental illness has the capability to do to people. The quicker people realise that mental illness is not shameful and is what it says it is- an illness- the quicker we'll lose the stigma and more people will reach out for help.
Because many many cases of mental illness can be helped. It might take time and some experimentation with different options but it can be done.
It will take a lot of time before mental illness is more widely accepted but with the increasing numbers of people it is affecting, no-one can avoid it.
Going through it definitely makes you a different person, in a good way, it makes you think about things more carefully, think about people's situations more carefully (like John Logan) so it can have a positive side to it to.
