The first answer is a good one. Stress does not "cause" epilepsy, but with someone who is prone to seizures, stress can cause a seizure (and basically, anyone who has just one seizure can be diagnosed an epileptic, which simply means they are prone to seizures). The seizure can happen whether they've ever previously had one before.

Other triggers can be somewhat simple things – flashing lights, artificial sweeteners, high-pitched noises, etc. Some seizures occur for no real reason at all. Seizures range in severity from extremely mild cases such as absence seizures (basically, the person "blanks out" and is non-responsive for a short period of time) to "status epilepticus" where the body is in an extended seizure state. Status eplepticus can lead to death in the most severe instances.

There are a variety of treatments available for seizures, and many people can at least manage their seizures if not fully control them. Epilepsy is a condition that cannot truly be "cured" – as it is being more prone than general to seizures, and doesn't have to do with the frequency or severity of seizures.
