Is Diarrhea Common When Switching a 1 Year Old to Whole Milk?

by admin

We are currently attempting to get our son off of formula (he will be 1 in a few days) but when we mix whole milk in with his formula it gives him diarrhea. He has always been on a milk based formula (Enfamil Lipil) and tolerates cheese, ice cream and other milk products with no problem. He doesn't seem sick or fussy at all. Is this normal? If so when will it stop and should we keep giving him whole milk? Any advice will help. Thanks :)

It's been so long since I've been there! lol I believe it *is* common, but don't remember.

He could actually be lactose intolerant and still not have a problem with some of the foods you mentioned. Some people are simply lactose intolerant and it never goes away. A good rule of thumb is that humans were not meant to consume a food that nature makes for baby cows.

Cheese may be tolerated because it's cultured and the bacteria take over some digestion. Same for yogurt. You're probably using more milk than ice cream, so that may account for that comparison, but it's just a guess.

Now that the "infant" phase is over for me, I follow a different rule: if it makes you sick, your body is saying no to it. Maybe that's your answer. But with a small child, it could be temporary. Your doc is the one to ask, except they typically don't know sh-t about nutrition.

Basically, no one really needs to have milk in their diet. Just ask any nutritionist.
