Hey everyone.... I have 2 daughters ages 7 & 5. They are a year apart in school. My 5 year old is in a kindergarten center and my 7 year old is in an elementary school. We are living in what they call a "buffer zone" consisting of 8 blocks in the district. Which means there is no "home elementary school" for these blocks.
I just received a call from the kindergarten center principal stating that my younger one will not be going to the same elementary school as my older one. Which is ridiculus because my 7 year old will be getting on a bus right in front of my house and my 5 year old will not be getting on the bus with her.
I am trying to find out if anyone knows if there are any laws against them seperating them this way? They are telling me that my older daughter can be changed to the school the younger one will be going to but I am not doing that because my older daughter is just getting comfortable in her school and with the nurse there and she has diabetes insipidus.
I know this probably sounds like I am just babbling but I literally just hung up and am looking on the computer for any info that will help me fight this. We live in New York in Suffolk County.
Thanks for any help you can give.
I actually did speak to the pricipal at the kindergarten center and they said I can pull my older daughter out of her school and put her into the new "home school" if I wanted but I CAN NOT have my younger daughter go to the school my older daughter is in. It is absurd I think. I have a call out to the assistant superintendent of the schools.

I would consult the staff at the school your 7 year old attends. I am not familiar with "buffer zones", but I know where I live if one child is accepted into a school the younger siblings automatically are (except for the School of the Arts, which you audition for). Tell them of your concerns.
Also, you can contact your school board and ask for help/advice.
Does the Kindergarten Center generally make the decision where the students there go?
