Should I Sell My Horse?

by admin

I recently had a bad fall and broke a vertabre and copressed another one in my lumbar region. I have been off work for nearly 6 weeks now and I cannot ride for the minimum of 3 months. I have got my check up and X- rays today to see if my spine has crumbled and if I require an operation on it.
My dialemma is that I want to keep my horse but everyone around me thinks it's about time I gave up as I'm only 24 and they don't want me ending up in a wheelchair or dead.
He is such a sweetie but still a youngster, I love riding so much it has been part of my life since I was a toddler but I don't know what to do for the best for me and him?

Help Please!
Get a Life MIKE! Do you have to be so insensitive?
Colmenar: I will let you all know later what the outcome is all I know so far is it hurts like hell and I can't ride for 3 months. I do have a great bond with my boyo he is a total poppet very sweet little horse really (well I say little he's 16.2hh lol), I already have a friend riding him for me he is coming along fabulously. I have been toying with the idea of selling him and buying a school master but the risk is still the same. I was only just leaving the yard to go on a quiet hack with him when the accident happened. I wish I could say I was jumping a 5 foot oxer but sadly I'm not one for going out with any style!! lol
Edit: MIKE You wish pmsl. I bet your some looser who still lives at home with mummy and can't hold down a job.
If you REALLY are that weatlhy it just goes to show you cant buy class!!
PRINTS: I've been riding since I was 18 months old I used to work in competition yards bringing on youngsters to show jump and event. So I kinda already know how to ride many many different horses. This is the 1st time in 6 years that I have fallen off so I can't really have a bad seat or need drastic riding lessons!!
I do have regular lessons as it is.

My horse got frightened, bolted and jumped a 5 bar gate started bucking. I can usually sit to a good buck and a rear but I had only just got on so didn't have any stirrups, as he bucked he cork screwed and dropped his shoulder. He's beeing schooled by a friend while I'm off and is coming on really well got great dressage and jumping potential!
Thank You all for your advise it's really appreciated. Just got back from the hospital and all is looking well (fingers x), my vertabres haven't compressed or crumbled any more and he thinks i'll heel up ok. Still can't ride at present but I will defintly be back in the saddle and I can start doing light exercise now thank god. Also I have many older horses I can borrow to get my confidence back up again.
Went out to feed my lil squirty after going to the hospital and my friend was schooling him. He's going absolutly fab, but I was getting nervous just by watching. Usually when I fall off I just get back on but obviously this time I couldn't so I thought stuff it I've got to do this and I had a little sit on him and walked him around. I'm not even nervous about getting back in the saddle again now in fact I cant wait.

Stuff my other half the horse is staying....yay!

P.S. I'll actually be wearing my body protector from now on though!! Better dust off the cob webs lol
P.P.S. I know I shouldn't have got on him at this stage coz of my back etc but I had to get it out of the way and I knew just by sitting on him I'd make my mind up. Bless hes such a good boy! Mummy just neads to wear her wings next time she trys to fly lol!!

No, keep him. Make sure you are fully recovered before even thinking about getting back on, and when you, please make sure you are wearing a body protector, esp when hacking out. Youngsters are unpredictable, and although body protectors are costly, they could save your life in the long run. They are advanced enough now to be comfortable and lightweight, and make sure you get one with the purple label (highest standard poss).

Everyone around you cannot make your decisions and I'm surprised that they are being so morbid instead of supportive! If my family had their way I would've given up long ago but if it is in your blood then you cannot possibly do it as you just get depressed - trust me, I've tried!

Get your friend to continue riding him, and when you are well enough, I'd borrow a schoolmaster for a while to get you back in the saddle and up to fitness again.

Please do not sell him, you will regret it in the long run!

MIKE; I live in a house worth £200k and drive a £700 Renault Megane - are you saying I'm not rich or good enough to answer questions?
