What Is a Good Home Remedy for Diarrhea in Kittens?

by admin

I adopted 2 kittens (same litter), they are 3 mos. old. They were wormed, had some starter vaccines given and were checked by a vet. They are both playful, active and have a good appetite. But the female (Lola) is having loose, light brown, VERY stinky bowel movements. Her brother (Dojo) is fine. We are going to the vet next week. I am aware that diarrhea is common in kittens, but would like to help her in the mean time. I have heard that rice and chicken helps, I have also heard that plain yogurt helps. Right now they are being fed canned food and IAM's dry kitten food. Lola doesn't appear to be feeling ill. Any suggestions?

Chicken & rice is good as a bland diet (just make sure that it's well cooked) There are also commercially made bland diets that you can buy. But don't change the diet completely…better to try mixing 3/4 of their existing food with 1/4 new food initially, then gradually changing. As someone above said, a diet change coud just make things worse. Make sure they've got easy access to water (don't offer milk or anything like that as it will just make the diarrhoea worse)

If it's infectious, then chances are that Dojo is probably infected as well. Keep a close eye on them both- I don't know when your vet appointment is, but kittens with diarrhoea can dehydrate very, very quickly. If either starts looking lethargic or ill, it would be an idea to make your vet appointment sooner, or call an emergency centre.
