Ok….it is spelled Diabetes Insipidus….and although all the people who answered this question before me did have some things right…..well some people really didnt know what they were talking about (no offence!)
So firstly there are more than one type of diabetes insipidus(also known as DI by those who have it)
1) Neurogenic DI also known as central, hypothalamic, pituitary or neurohypophyseal is caused by a deficiency of the antidiuretic hormone, vasopressin. This form of DI comes in two types -Idiopathic, which means no known cause and Familial, which means inherited. Also sometimes this is caused by brain tumors and/or removal of part or all of the pituitary gland.
2) Nephrogenic DI also known as vasopressin-resistant. It is caused by insensitivity of the kidneys to the effect of the antidiuretic hormone, vasopressin.
3) Dipsogenic DI is a form of primary polydipsia. It is caused by abnormal thirst and the excessive intake of water or other liquids.
4) Gestagenic DI also known as gestational. It is caused by a deficiency of the antidiuretic hormone, vasopressin, that occurs only during pregnancy.
The most noticeable symptoms of all these forms of DI is
excessive urination (peeing a lot) and drinking large amounts to compensate for the loss of water through the urination, there are more symptoms but they differ depending on the type of DI.
If you want to know more about this illness there is a great america website called the Diabetes Insipidus Foundation (DIF) –www.diabetesinsipidus.org – which would be a good place to start
