people dying from alcoholism don't seem to have any particular problems with their vision? I would have thought that regular and prolonged use of alcohol would still destroy the nerves in the eye. I know it destroys brain cells and can cause epilepsy in chronic alcoholics.

Pure alcohol will destroy the retina and cause irreversable blindness if drunk in tiny amounts yes that is true, but keep in mind that if a mouthfull is taken it will kill.
Commercially sold alcohol is very dilute, thats why it doesnt cause that same effects, BUT its still can be a deadly poison if drunk in enough quantaties.
there are many cases of alcohol poisening worldwide
