Can a simple back strain be enough to cause some nerve irritation (numbness and tingling in leg and foot)?

I am not a stranger to back problems. I had a fusion (L5, S1) four years ago. I have been relatively pain free since and have even returned to playing sports. Recently I had some pain flare up and it has caused some tingling in the leg and foot. I am planning to see my surgeon again but not for two weeks so in the meantime I am looking for some peace of mind that this isn't a serious issue for me again but just that I aggravated something back there. If anyone can share some thoughts I would appreciate it. Otherwise it could be a long two weeks until I can get some definitive answers from a professional.
