These tumors grow from the sheath covering the vestibulocochlear nerve. Acoustic neuromas are tumor, or growth that is not cancerous and usually grow slowly. Over time the abnormal growth of cells serves no purpose. This can cause gradual hearing loss, ringing in the ear, and dizziness. Common signs and symptoms of acoustic neuroma include:
- Hearing loss is usually gradual — although in some cases sudden — and occurs on only one side or more, pronounced on one side.
- Ringing (tinnitus) in the affected ear.
- Unsteadiness, loss of balance.
- Dizziness (vertigo).
- Facial numbness and very rarely, weakness or loss of muscle movement
