Yes, a diabetic can consume alcohol, but it really isn't recommended. If you do decide to drink, keep these guidelines in mind:
    — Only drink when your blood sugar level is in good control / within the normal range. Alcohol actually lowers blood sugar so if you are low, don't drink at all.
    — Keep it within limits of reason. 1 drink is plenty.
    — Avoid heavy beers and sugary mixed drinks. Settle for light / ultra light beers or drinks mixed with water / soda water.
    — Always have someone with you who knows how to react in case of a diabetic emergency. Your blood sugar may react differently to alcohol consumption at different times so don't count on one reaction being the norm for you.
    — Always have a driver! Drinking and driving is deadly for anyone… not just diabetics.

Again, alcohol consumption can be very dangerous for the diabetic patient, but if you must drink, use your head and keep your reason.
