8 Signs of High Blood Sugar That Not Everyone Knows

High blood sugar, which is medically known as Hyperglycemia, can cause serious life-threatening health problems when left untreated. For these reasons, we should be vigilant about detecting early signs of high blood sugar. (Read more about Diabetes Symptoms)

Here are some subtle signs and symptoms of high diabetic blood sugar levels that we should pay attention to.

  • Urinating often. When diabetes strikes, the system in your body that is responsible for breaking down food into sugar becomes less efficient. To compensate for the excess sugar sitting in your bloodstream, your body tries to flush it out through urine. That’s why you feel the need to go to the bathroom more often.
  • Feeling thirstier than usual. As a person with diabetes urinates a lot, this can make him feel parched. Now the tendency of a person with high blood sugar is to reach for drinks to quench their thirst.  Most of them choose beverages that they are used to such as juices, milk, soda, and chocolate drinks. These do not solve the problem as drinking these add more sugar to the bloodstream, making things worse.

  • Unexplained weight loss though you are eating and feeling hungry. As a person with high diabetes blood sugar levels loses sugar through urination, he also loses calories. At the same time, diabetes keeps the sugar from the food from reaching the body’s cells. This is why a person with diabetes might constantly feel hungry.
  • Feeling shaky.  A person with blood sugar on diabetic levels may feel shaky especially if he eats foods that are high in carbohydrates. This may be due to the quick drop in glucose levels and having too much insulin in the body.
  • Extreme fatigue and moody or grumpy. You may feel fatigued when your body does not get enough fuel. This may be due to your diabetes getting in the way of your cells’ energy absorption process. Also, a sudden rise in your blood sugar level can affect your mood and temper. In fact, mood or temper swings of people with high blood sugar mimic depression-like symptoms, but they experience improvement in their disposition after their blood sugar normalizes.
  • Blurry vision. When you experience blurry vision as one of the signs of high blood sugar and of diabetes, this only means that your eye lenses do not focus well due to the temporary build-up of glucose in your eyes. The solution is to stabilize your blood sugar level so your eyes can go back to their normal vision.
  • Cuts or bruises that are slow to heal.  High blood sugar also affects our immune system and our body’s process of healing, which is why cuts and bruises are slow to heal for a person who has diabetes.
  • Tingling, pain, or numbness in the hands or feet. These are all signs of mild nerve damage which is a result of excess sugar in the blood.
