Wellbutrin seizure, common? Epilepsy?

Hi All,

I had a grand mal seizure that they are trying rule out was caused by the drug. Has anyone else had this experience? Epilepsy does not run in my family but if they get another abnormal EEG then I will have to go on Epilepsy medication. If I have to, how long would I need to be on the meds to be able to drive again? Any suggestions/comments would help, thanks.

ANSWER:

I can provide some general information but please discuss your situation with your doctor or neurologist.

Seizures can be caused by a variety of factors including certain medications, high fever, high or low blood sugar, alcohol or drug withdrawal, or a brain concussion. However, only a medical professional can provide you with accurate information about what may have caused your seizure.

Regarding driving, regulations vary from place to place. In many areas, you must be seizure-free for a certain period of time (often 6 months to a year) before you can legally drive, regardless of whether or not you’re on medication. However, this can vary and it’s important to check with your local Department of Motor Vehicles or equivalent.

As for the duration of medication, it varies from person to person. Some people may need to stay on medication for a few years, others may need to be on it for life. It depends on the individual’s response to the medication, the frequency and severity of their seizures, and other factors. Always remember to follow your doctor’s advice about medication, and never stop taking it without consulting them first.

Again, please consult with your healthcare provider to discuss these concerns. They know your medical history and can provide the most accurate advice.
