Triumph over tragedy
Often, people would think that tragedy was only in the form of literary works of art or dramas, not in the form of real-life happenings. Unlike in the case of Jane Baltimore. Born in Tennessee in the 1955s, Jane had never known, met, or read about anyone who had hated many people for as many reasons as herself. Some hate because of their prejudices against people of different skin colors and some because they have nothing better to do. However, Jane hated everyone and everything that came into contact with her life. The very sensation of having her life controlled by a person who could not manage their own life angered her frequently. Most of all, she hated the fact that the country she lived in was nothing except a slave country and everyone living in it had to be slaves to one or the other.
In fact, Jane herself was a “slave”. A “slave” to her family, to people that were supposed to love her the most. Being born into a family of prostitutes and murderers, it was surely natural that her life was one like that too. Her mother, after giving birth to Jane, ran away with a man to find a better life. Jane was then left with her grandmother to survive. Unlike most families where the elder person had to work for the younger one, Jane’s case was utterly different. Her grandmother abused Jane since Jane was young and forced her to act deaf in front of other people in order to get sympathy and most importantly money. In the night Jane was forced to seduce men in order to get more money, leading her to get pregnant with her first child at the mere age of thirteen.
Due to the constant nagging of neighbors, her grandmother was left with no choice but to let Jane go to school. Although many would think that Jane would enjoy the mood of being surrounded by other people of her own age, she did not. People often ridiculed her because of the state of her clothes, the way she was not able to pronounce words properly, and most of all, the was that she kept hitting the table as a sign of boredom. This led her teacher to confirm her suspicions. In her youth, Jane was diagnosed with Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Her teacher suggested that she start swimming, partly to provide her with an outlet for his energy. She excelled as a swimmer and by the age of 15 held a national record for her age group. Learning about her talents and her poor life conditions, a European couple adopted her and brought her up. They provided her with clear influences in her studies as well as her swimming. Soon, more age group records followed, and Jane’s rapid improvement culminated in her qualifying for the Summer Olympics at the age of 16. this helped her create a mainstream name among all the other athletes in the world.
From a slave prostitute to a professional athlete whose name is in the minds of almost every athlete in the world, be it a professional or a very minor athlete. Jane Baltimore’s story is indeed one where we see one gaining triumph in spite of the tragedies that one has faced.
